Kenya Power has issued a statement explaining the outage that has hit several parts of the country on Thursday evening.
The utility firm stated that it encountered a system disturbance on its electrical grid on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at 5:40 pm, leading to widespread power outages across the nation.
The disruption has resulted in inconvenience for many residents, prompting a call for patience as efforts are underway to restore normal power supply.
Kenya Power has assured citizens that they are actively working to address the issue and restore electricity as fast as humanly possible.
“At 5:40 PM (EAT) today, Thursday, 2nd May 2024, we experienced a system disturbance on the grid, resulting in power supply disruption in most parts of the country.
“We regret any inconvenience caused and urge for patience from our customers as we work towards restoring normal power supply at the earliest opportunity,” Kenya Power said.
The utility firm further promised to provide updates on the restoration progress within the next two hours.
“We will issue an update on the progress of the power restoration exercise within two hours,” Kenya Power said.
The incident underscores the challenges of maintaining stable electricity infrastructure in the country and highlights the importance of swift response and communication during such disruptions.
Kenya Power usually gives updates on scheduled blackouts for several counties hours before the outages but the Thursday incident happened abruptly.
Nairobi County was experiencing heavy downpours at the time the power went off.
The ongoing rains have caused flooding across the country causing significant damage to infrastructure, homes, and livelihoods.
The damage extends to various sectors, including power connection, housing, agriculture, transportation, and public services.
