Former Regional Commissioner George Natembeya who is eyeing the Trans Nzoia gubernatorial seat has claimed that there are unnamed aspirants who are buying national identity cards from some registered voters.
Addressing the media in Lessos area of Kwanza constituency after meeting electorates, Natembeya said a single ID card is sold at Ksh 1,000 with an intention of denying people the right to vote during party primaries and general elections scheduled for August 9.
Natembeya said buying IDs is a desperate measure resolved by aspirants who want to be in power by all means.
“There are people who believe they must win elections no matter the means. Some in Trans Nzoia who have felt the election heat have started moving around villages buying a single ID card at one thousand shillings,” Natembeya revealed.
The former administrator urged the locals not to sell the ID cards because it is a serious security matter. He said the cards can be used to commit some offences landing the owners in unnecessary legal battles.
“Selling your ID is very dangerous. Surrendering your ID to someone who promises to keep it for you for a period of over four months can land you in jail because it can be misused,” he cautioned.
Natembeya who is running on the Democratic Action Party of Kenya DAP-K ticket said the business is done as a private affair making it hard for security agencies to detect.
He called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), and law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and nab politicians who are perpetrating political intolerance in political rallies and campaigns.
“When we are doing our campaigns, let us do our campaigns peacefully. People should not stage violence in their campaigns and blame it on their opponents. When there is a breakdown of law and order, there is the law that deals with that. Therefore we want law enforcers to do their job,” he appealed.
