Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino says he is still locked up in police cells despite a court order directing authorities to take him to hospital.

In a post shared on the MP’s official Facebook page, Babu Owino, through his handlers, said he is detained at Kileleshwa Police Station, hours after Milimani Chief Magistrate Lukas Onyina ordered the police to escort him to hospital after he said he was unwell.

“The court ordered for Babu Owino to be taken to the hospital for treatment after being detained for 3 days without food and he was unwell too. The police have defied the court orders, and have instead locked him up at Kileleshwa Police Station,” the post shared at midnight reads.

The outspoken legislator had, through his lawyers, told the court that police had not allowed him to drink water since his arrest on Tuesday evening.

“The first accused will be escorted to the hospital for medical attention. The rest of the accused persons will be remanded at Kileleshwa Police Station until tomorrow,” Onyina ruled.

Babu Owino, 6 others charged

Babu Owino was arraigned at Milimani Law Courts alongside self-declared Bunge la Mwananchi President Calvin Okoth Otieno alias Gaucho and five others.

The suspects were charged with conspiring to commit subversive activities over their alleged role in planning ongoing anti-government protests. They denied the charges.

The other five suspects are Tom Odondo, Michael Otieno, Pascal Ouma, Kevin Wambo and Willys Owino.

According to the prosecution, the suspects committed the offence on dates between July 7 and 23, 2023 with others who were not in court within Nairobi County.

The prosecution opposed the suspects’ release on bail, saying they are a threat to national security.

The magistrate is expected to deliver the ruling on the suspects’ bail application later on Friday.
