Two unidentified people from Murera Ward of Juja, Kiambu county have died after the car they were in slipped into a dam.

The two, a male and a female, are reported to have been relaxing inside their vehicle in the night of Tuesday, January 17, 2023, when the incident happened.

“They were enjoying themselves but unfortunately the car slipped into the water. We don’t know how their vehicle slipped into the dam as the two were just relaxed. They seemed to have been having a good time,” John Mugo, an eyewitness, said.

“People come here to have fun but we need to have control personnel to ensure such incidents do not happen again in future,” Brian Njoroge, a resident in the area added.

By last evening, area MCA Ngatha Wambiri revealed that rescuers had managed to recover the body of the female victim while efforts to recover the unidentified man and the vehicle were underway.

Wambiri, who spoke at the scene, warned Kenyans against enjoying entertainment near the dam and called for the fencing of the entire project to avert further incidents.

He revealed that the Ward has five dams some of which have been dangerous to locals and which he insisted must now be fenced to protect lives.

The MCA at the same time vowed to introduce a bill at the county assembly that will seek to have the dams transformed into productive agriculture stimulators.

“We have five dams here some of which have been unsafe for locals. I am in the process of introducing a motion in the assembly that will seek to have them fenced. We cannot continue to watch as our people die over an issue we can solve,” Wambiri said.

By the time of going to filing this story, rescue efforts spearheaded by the Kiambu County rescue team and divers in collaboration with police were ongoing.

Martin Ngugi, a fire officer from the county, told journalists that the vehicle that is still in the dam had two occupants.

The vehicle, he said, has already been spotted but will be recovered after the male victim’s body is removed from the dam.

“We are doing everything within our means to recover the body of the male victim as well as the vehicle that is still inside the dam,” Ngugi said.
