World Cup: Tuchel confident England players will defy Mexico altitude

England boss Thomas Tuchel has backed his team to cope with the challenging altitude and atmospheric conditions in Mexico City ahead of their high-stakes World Cup Round of 16 clash against the hosts on Monday, July 6, 2026.

The Three Lions are set to square off against Javier Aguirre’s side at the iconic Estadio Azteca with a coveted place in the quarter-finals at stake. The highly anticipated fixture has been dominated by pre-match concerns regarding the grueling altitude and weather disruptions the players will have to grapple with, a factor the German gaffer addressed directly.

Speaking to the press following the team’s training session on Sunday, July 5, 2026, Tuchel revealed that he had personally felt the physiological impact of the thin air immediately after the team’s arrival.

Unable to sleep

“We feel it even when you are not training. Personally, I felt a slight headache, and during the day at the hotel, I found it difficult to sleep compared to previous days. However, it is nothing you cannot handle and adapt to,” he stated.

Despite acknowledging the physical toll, the manager expressed confidence that his squad would be braced for the atmosphere awaiting them.

Prepared for atmosphere

“We were cheered when we arrived here, and everyone was very respectful. We don’t expect that in our match, but I don’t expect a hostile environment. A stadium like this will create an advantage and momentum for the home team. We are prepared for it. They will try to give us a taste of the intensity of the heat, and we will need to find an answer for that,” he explained.

While he admitted full adaptation to the conditions in Azteca is impossible in such a short window, he emphasised that resilience will carry them through.

“The players felt it in the very first minute of the training session, but as the session progressed, they began to cope with it much better. We cannot physically adapt to it fully in this time frame; that is impossible, but we arrived early enough to experience it and prepare mentally,” he concluded.

Brazil or Norway await

The winner of the encounter will advance to the quarterfinals, where the winner between Brazil and Norway awaits.

The two will battle it out in another encounter at 11:00 pm.
