The value of FIFA World Cup trophy revealed

The FIFA World Cup Trophy is more than just football’s biggest prize,it is also one of the most valuable trophies in the world.

While millions of fans dream of seeing their national team lift it, the iconic trophy carries an impressive monetary value thanks to the precious materials used to craft it and its rich history.

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway, the spotlight is not only on the players and teams but also on the iconic trophy, whose value has soared alongside rising gold prices.

According to Forbes, citing analysis by LSEG, the financial data company that owns the London Stock Exchange, the trophy’s gold content is now worth approximately $713,000 (about Ksh92 million).

“$713,000 (Ksh 92 million) The approximate value of the gold in the World Cup trophy,” Forbes stated.

LSEG analysis shows that the trophy’s gold value has increased by more than 150 per cent since the 2022 tournament, rising from around $277,000 (approximately Ksh36 million) four years ago to its current value, driven by the sharp rise in global gold prices.

The increase means the gold content alone is now worth more than two-and-a-half times what it was during the previous World Cup.

Trophy’s karat gold

Forbes also stated that the current FIFA World Cup Trophy is crafted from solid 18-karat gold and weighs 6.175 kilograms (13.6 pounds). It stands 36.8 centimetres (14.5 inches) tall and features a base made from two layers of semi-precious green malachite.

Although the trophy weighs more than six kilograms, it contains about 4.93 kilograms of pure gold, which largely determines its raw material value.

“LSEG, the data firm that owns the London Stock Exchange, explains that the run-up in the price of the precious metal means that the nearly 11 pounds of 18-karat gold in the trophy is worth more than two and a half times as much as in 2022,” Forbes stated.

When it is not travelling for official FIFA events, the original FIFA World Cup Trophy is kept under tight security at the FIFA Museum in Zurich, Switzerland.

“The trophy, which stands 14.5 inches tall, spends most of its time at the FIFA Museum in Zurich,” Forbes added.

Despite its enormous financial value, the FIFA World Cup Trophy remains priceless to players and fans alike.

The winning nation does not keep the original trophy permanently; after the final, the champions celebrate with the original before it is returned to FIFA, with the victorious team later receiving a gold-plated replica.

For footballers, lifting the trophy represents the highest achievement in the sport.

While its gold content alone is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, its greatest value lies in the legacy, history and honour attached to becoming a FIFA World Cup champion.
