Spain vs Argentina World Cup final becomes most expensive US sports event ever

The 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina has already made history before a ball is kicked.
The match, set for Sunday, July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, has become the most expensive sporting event ever held in the United States based on average ticket prices.
The final brings together two of football’s biggest nations in a highly anticipated showdown. Argentina is aiming to defend its World Cup title, while Spain is chasing its second World Cup crown. The possibility of Lionel Messi playing in what is expected to be his final World Cup has also added to the excitement, pushing ticket demand to record levels.
Record-breaking ticket prices
According to ticket marketplace TickPick, the average purchase price for a World Cup final ticket has reached $11,327 (about Ksh1.5M), setting a new record for a sporting event in the United States.
Even the lowest-priced tickets remain out of reach for many supporters. As of Thursday, July 16, 2026, the cheapest available ticket on TickPick was listed at $7,402 (about Ksh957,000), making entry into the stadium a costly affair.
TickPick vice president and head of growth Matt Ferrel said the World Cup final represents one of the biggest events in global sport.
“This becomes sort of like the pinnacle of that sort of world event, that Mount Rushmore moment,” Ferrel told USA TODAY Sports.
The World Cup final has now overtaken previous record holders, including Super Bowl 58 between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, which had an average ticket price of $9,411. (about Ksh1.3M) It also surpassed Super Bowl 55, Super Bowl 54 and Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs.
Why is demand so high?
Several factors have contributed to the sharp rise in ticket prices. Argentina’s bid to win consecutive World Cup titles and the prospect of Messi’s final appearance on football’s biggest stage have made the match even more attractive.
Spain’s impressive run throughout the tournament has also increased interest, with supporters eager to see the team compete for another world title. Ferrel noted that ticket prices were already around the $6,000 mark before the semifinal matches, before climbing further once Spain and Argentina secured their places in the final.
Supporters from both countries have travelled in large numbers throughout the tournament, filling stadiums wherever their teams have played. At the same time, growing interest in football across the United States during the World Cup has added even more demand, helping drive ticket prices to unprecedented levels ahead of Sunday’s final.
