Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni believes his players are ready for the biggest match of their journey as they prepare to defend their FIFA World Cup crown against Spain in the final at New York/New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, July 19, 2026.

Speaking alongside goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez before the decisive showdown, Scaloni expressed full respect for Spain’s quality while insisting his side is capable of completing another memorable chapter in Argentine football history.

Final preparations

“We’re preparing for this match like any other,” Scaloni said. “We’re desperate to come out on top. We’re putting a lot of focus into analysing Spain so that we get an idea of what they might do. I see no weakness in them – they’re a top team. But regardless of the fact it’s a final, it’s another football match where we need to be at our best to try and win. We aren’t dwelling on the fact it’s a World Cup final, because that could distract us. Ultimately, we’re gearing up for it as best we can, just like any other match, then we’ll see what happens.”

Argentina head into the championship match after another impressive knockout campaign, highlighted by their semi-final victory over England. Scaloni credited his squad for maintaining high standards throughout the tournament while acknowledging that Spain will provide an enormous challenge.

“I think the team have done great things in the last few matches, especially in the second half against England, in which we performed very well, and not just in the latter stages. We’re in a good place, even though there’s room for improvement. The team are in good shape, and we’re up against a strong opponent. You have to bear in mind that Spain will also have their say and will be prepared for us. After all, we’re no secret – people know how Argentina play. That makes our achievements all the more impressive.”

Exchange with Messi

Scaloni also reflected on the emotional exchange he shared with Lionel Messi after the semi-final triumph. The Argentina captain was seen embracing his coach and saying “pure history,” a moment that deeply touched the manager.

“He’s pure history. History, a legend… I’m not sure what else to add. The fact those words were said to me is irrelevant – they were meant for everyone. It makes me so proud that the best footballer the world has ever seen thinks that – it’s just wonderful. To have reached a final the way he’s done at the age of 39, that’s quite the feat. That’s why I said we should enjoy it. We felt the absence of Diego [Maradona] long after he hung up his boots. Well, Messi’s still with us, and we have to cherish what he does,” Scaloni replied.

The Argentine coach also paid tribute to his squad for sustaining success over several years, describing their achievements as remarkable regardless of Sunday’s outcome.

“I said to the lads yesterday that what they’ve pulled off is incredible. My gratitude towards them – on behalf of the entire coaching staff– is eternal. It’s because it wasn’t easy to get this far, to this stage, and to compete at this level for so many years. It’s been nothing short of extraordinary. Then, as we always say, we’ve got a chance of winning – and hopefully we do – but even if we don’t, I think our journey has been incredible and an example for everyone.” He added.
