Saka ranks England’s best World Cup finish in 60 years as deserved milestone

Bukayo Saka has described England’s third-place finish at the 2026 World Cup in North America as a well-deserved feat.
The Arsenal ace was the undisputed star of the match, netting a brilliant hat-trick to ensure the Three Lions secured the bronze medal.
His hat trick saw them end on the right scoreline of a 4-6 thriller in Miami against the Les Bleus.
England claims bronze
The achievement marks England’s finest World Cup run in sixty years, dating back to their historic 1966 triumph, which earned them the iconic star on their shirts.
While acknowledging that the performance against France could not entirely make up for their recent semifinal loss to Spain, Saka emphasized that the victory was a testament to the squad’s elite mentality.
Amid the heavy criticism that followed their late capitulation against Argentina in the crucial semifinal clash, Saka stressed that the performance against former champions France proved the team’s mentality and resilience.

“Today was about being professional and getting back to work after the semifinal defeat,” Saka said.
“We deserved to finish strong given the tournament we’ve had, reaching a position England hasn’t seen in 60 years. This group deserves nothing less. We have that strong mentality—it has never been a problem for us, and we showed that today. We can be proud of ourselves for achieving this feat.”
The winger also reflected on his hat-trick, attributing the milestone to work behind the scenes, especially since he was among several squad members who battled fitness issues throughout the tournament.
“On a personal level, I have worked so hard to try and be ready for this tournament, to be available, and to produce moments like that,” he stated. “I am proud to achieve this record (scoring a World Cup hat trick) and join the exclusive club of three other Englishmen who have done it, For me, it is an incredible achievement to have, and I am proud of myself for reaching this level.”
