Messi pens emotional open letter to Argentina supporters ahead of World Cup final

Lionel Messi has shared an emotional message with Argentina supporters ahead of the FIFA World Cup final against Spain at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, July 19, 2026, saying the team’s greatest achievement has been the journey they have taken together rather than the trophies they have collected.
The Argentina captain reflected on the bond within the squad, highlighting the sacrifices, resilience and unity that have defined their campaign as they prepare for one last challenge.
Messi’s open letter
“The most beautiful thing about all these years was never just the titles, but the entire journey,” Messi wrote on Instagram on Sunday, July 19, 2026.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner said the memories created with his teammates would remain with him forever, pointing to the daily commitment, shared experiences and ability to overcome setbacks as the foundation of the team’s success.

“Sharing day-to-day life with this group, competing together, picking ourselves up in the difficult moments, and enjoying every step.”
Messi also expressed gratitude to everyone behind the scenes, acknowledging the players, coaching staff and support personnel who have helped create a close-knit environment within the national team.
“Thanks to each one of my teammates, to the coaching staff, and to all the great people who work every day to keep this National Team as a family.”
As Argentina prepares to battle for the World Cup trophy against the 2010 world champions, Messi has emphasised that regardless of the result, the squad has already secured a special place in the country’s football history.
“Whatever happens tomorrow, this group has already written a story that we will never forget and that no one will be able to erase.”
Historical re-union
Meanwhile, ahead of the much-awaited final, an image of Lionel Messi holding a baby Lamine Yamal of Spain during a 2007 photoshoot has gone viral across social media. The photograph features an infant Lamine Yamal alongside his mother, Sheila Ebana, participating in a UNICEF charity campaign.
The Argentine maestro, now widely regarded as the world’s greatest footballer at 39 years old, was filmed at the time shyly attempting to bathe the infant.

What nobody could have predicted in 2007 was that the baby would follow so strikingly in Messi’s footsteps, mirroring his legacy in more ways than his on-pitch prowess. Like Messi, Lamine joined the Barcelona-famed academy La Masia and also went on to become a UNICEF ambassador.
“Honestly, that photo of us is crazy, because, well, that’s life, right? I was in that photo with him as a baby, and here we both are, playing in a World Cup final,” Messi said while addressing reporters in New York on Friday, July 17, 2026.
