Luis Diaz dazzles as Colombia punish Uzbekistan to secure crucial World Cup victory

By , June 18, 2026

Colombia opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 3-1 triumph over tournament newcomers Uzbekistan on Thursday, June 18, 2026, capitalising on Portugal’s earlier stumble against DR Congo in Group K.

Match report

The South Americans were made to work for the win by a determined Uzbek side that defended resolutely for much of the first half. However, Colombia’s quality eventually shone through just before the interval when Luis Diaz produced an exquisite through ball that released Daniel Munoz, who calmly fired past the goalkeeper in the 41st minute.

Despite falling behind, Uzbekistan refused to back down and made history midway through the second half. Their first-ever World Cup goal arrived in the 60th minute after Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas mishandled a dangerous volley from Eldor Shomurodov, allowing Abbosbek Fayzullaev to nod home from close range.

The Central Asians’ celebrations were short-lived. Five minutes later, Diaz restored Colombia’s lead when goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov failed to deal with his effort, allowing the ball to creep across the line.

Colombia wrapped up the result deep into stoppage time. Jaminton Campaz, introduced from the bench, met a precise delivery from Cucho Hernandez with a well-placed header to seal the victory and collect three valuable points.

Diaz leads by example

Luis Diaz was the driving force behind Colombia’s success from the opening whistle. The Bayern Munich attacker looked dangerous throughout, constantly troubling Uzbekistan’s back line with his movement and creativity.

Before setting up the opening goal, Diaz had already struck the woodwork and repeatedly stretched the opposition defence. His assist for Munoz showcased outstanding vision and precision, with the perfectly weighted pass splitting the defence and allowing his teammate to finish in spectacular fashion.

Diaz’s influence did not stop there. His second-half strike, although aided by a goalkeeping error, capped a superb individual display and underlined his importance to Colombia’s World Cup ambitions.

Munoz’s opening goal was also a standout moment, combining intelligent movement with an emphatic finish that will surely rank among the finest goals scored at the tournament so far.

Uzbekistan show promise

Although they left empty-handed, Uzbekistan earned plenty of respect with their spirited performance.

The nation’s first World Cup goal marked a significant milestone in the country’s football journey. Years of investment in youth development, training facilities and football infrastructure appeared to bear fruit when 22-year-old Fayzullaev etched his name into Uzbek football history.

Head coach Fabio Cannavaro’s side approached the match cautiously, focusing on defensive discipline against more experienced opponents. Understandably, some nerves were evident early on as many of the players were appearing on football’s biggest stage for the first time.

However, confidence grew after the break. Uzbekistan began to attack with greater purpose and were rewarded with their historic goal. While they ultimately lacked the quality needed to produce a major upset, the performance suggested they belong at this level and can take encouragement into their remaining matches.
