England began their final preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over New Zealand in a friendly match played in Tampa, Florida on Saturday night, June 6, 2026.

The decisive moment arrived just before the halftime whistle when captain Harry Kane rose to meet a delivery from Djed Spence and directed a glancing header into the net, giving the Three Lions a lead they would protect until full time.

Weather challenges

Played under sweltering temperatures and high humidity at Raymond James Stadium, the contest served as an important opportunity for England to adapt to conditions similar to those expected during the World Cup. Head coach Thomas Tuchel took full advantage of the fixture by changing all 11 players at the break.

England controlled much of the opening half and created numerous opportunities, registering significantly more attempts on goal than their opponents. However, wasteful finishing prevented them from extending their lead, with Ollie Watkins among those unable to convert promising chances.

The pattern continued after halftime as England maintained territorial dominance against the tournament’s lowest-ranked side. One of the notable moments came with the introduction of 17-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha, who made his senior international debut and impressed with an energetic display. Midfielder Jude Bellingham also threatened on several occasions, but England could not add to their advantage.

Despite the slender scoreline, the match provided several positives for Tuchel’s squad. England emerged without injuries, gained valuable experience in demanding weather conditions, and secured a confidence-boosting win ahead of the tournament.

Kane’s milestone

Kane’s goal further highlighted his impressive form. The strike marked his 79th goal for England and continued the momentum from a prolific season with his club side, where he found the net 61 times across all competitions.

England will conclude their World Cup warm-up schedule with a friendly against Costa Rica on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, before opening their World Cup campaign against Croatia on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

Several players from Arsenal, including Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze, were unavailable for the New Zealand fixture but are expected to return for the Costa Rica match after being granted additional rest following their club commitments in the UEFA Champions League final.
