Deniz Undav takes early lead in World Cup 2026 Golden Boot race
Germany striker Deniz Undav has emerged as the frontrunner in the race for the adidas Golden Boot after an impressive start to the FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign.
The German forward climbed to the top of the scoring charts following a match-winning brace in Germany’s 2-1 victory over Côte d’Ivoire on Saturday, June 20, 2026. His latest goals, combined with a goal and two assists from Germany’s opening match against Curaçao, have given him the edge in the competition to finish as the tournament’s leading scorer.
Undav currently sits atop the standings with three goals and two assists, narrowly ahead of Argentina captain Lionel Messi and Canada striker Jonathan David, who have each scored three goals but are yet to register an assist.

Messi’s brilliance
Messi, playing in his sixth FIFA World Cup, reminded the football world of his enduring brilliance by netting a hat-trick during Argentina’s convincing 3-0 win over Algeria. The three goals not only boosted Argentina’s hopes of retaining their title but also saw the legendary forward draw level with former Germany striker Miroslav Klose as the tournament’s all-time leading scorer.
Meanwhile, Canada’s Jonathan David delighted home supporters with a clinical hat-trick in his country’s emphatic 6-0 victory over Qatar in Vancouver. His performance strengthened Canada’s bid for a deep run in the competition and placed him firmly among the favourites for the Golden Boot award.
Several other attacking stars remain within touching distance of the leading trio. Brazil’s Vinicius Junior, France’s Kylian Mbappe, Norway’s Erling Haaland and England captain Harry Kane have all scored twice and are expected to continue challenging for the prestigious individual accolade as the tournament progresses.
The Netherlands are also strongly represented in the race, with Crysencio Summerville, Cody Gakpo and Brian Brobbey all featuring among the top scorers. Japan’s Ayase Ueda and Daichi Kamada have likewise enjoyed productive starts, helping the Asian side make a strong impression on the global stage.

Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi, New Zealand’s Elijah Just, Morocco’s Ismael Saibari, Sweden’s Yasin Ayari, Brazil’s Matheus Cunha, Canada’s Cyle Larin, USA forward Folarin Balogun and Germany’s Kai Havertz are among the players who have already found the net twice and remain in contention.
Golden Boot winning criteria
The adidas Golden Boot is awarded to the player who finishes the World Cup with the highest number of goals. If two or more players are tied on goals, assists are used as the first tie-breaker. Should players remain level after goals and assists, the award is decided by the total minutes played, with the player who has played fewer minutes receiving the higher ranking.
With the group stage still underway and several heavyweight nations yet to complete their second matches, the race for the Golden Boot remains wide open. However, Undav’s explosive start has made him the man to catch as football’s biggest stars continue their pursuit of individual and team glory at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
