Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente believes his side has timed its rise in form perfectly after defeating France 2-0 on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup final for the first time since its historic triumph in 2010.

La Roja produced an impressive display in Dallas, with Mikel Oyarzabal opening the scoring from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute before Pedro Porro sealed the victory shortly before the hour mark to eliminate one of the tournament’s strongest contenders.

King’s recognition

After the final whistle, De la Fuente disclosed that Spain’s players received a congratulatory phone call from King Felipe VI in the dressing room.

“It is such a pride that our king called us and continues to support us,” De la Fuente said. “We are responsible for the joy people are feeling in the streets. This generation of players has such a great attitude, and they are role models for so many values.”

The Spanish manager explained that the team’s growing performances throughout the tournament were part of a carefully managed approach aimed at ensuring they would be at their best during the decisive stages.

“We keep improving from one match to the next, from one competition to the next. It was all planned for us to reach these key moments in the best shape possible, and I think we are in great shape now,” he said. “In terms of our football, we have reached our peak at the right moment after a long season.”

Spain successfully contained a dangerous French attack spearheaded by Kylian Mbappe, with De la Fuente crediting his players’ organization, discipline and commitment.

“We were probably facing one of the best national teams in the world. However, they were also facing the best team, the best group in the world,” he said. “We are a team, and when you face a team like us, we are unbeatable. That is how we feel now.” The tactician stated.

Rodri steals show

The coach reserved special praise for midfielder Rodri, describing him as the “backbone” of the squad, while also hailing Dani Olmo as “a genius in his position.” Even so, he stressed that Spain’s success has been built on teamwork rather than individual brilliance.

“What is important here is the team, and that is how they understand it. Every individual works for the benefit of the group.”

Although Spain celebrated reaching the final, De la Fuente reminded his players that their ultimate objective is still ahead.

“We have one more step, the last one, the toughest one. We want to win this World Cup and lift the trophy.”

Looking ahead to Sunday’s final at New York New Jersey Stadium, where Spain will meet either England or Argentina, De la Fuente remained relaxed about the identity of the opponent.

“We will welcome either of them with open arms.” He said.
