Bubista: The coach who guided Cape Verde to unforgettable World Cup journey
Cape Verde may have fallen just short of producing one of the biggest shocks in FIFA World Cup history, but the Blue Sharks left the tournament with their reputation greatly enhanced after pushing defending champions Argentina to the limit in the Round of 32.
The island nation from the Atlantic Ocean, located off the coast of West Africa near Senegal, twice came from behind to level the score before eventually losing 3-2 after extra time on Saturday, July 4, 2026. Despite the defeat, Cape Verde’s fearless display won admiration from football fans around the globe.
A major figure behind the team’s historic campaign is head coach Pedro Leitão Brito, popularly known as Bubista, who masterminded Cape Verde’s impressive debut appearance at the World Cup.
Why is he called Bubista?
The nickname “Bubista” comes from Cape Verdean Creole and refers to someone who originates from Boa Vista, one of Cape Verde’s ten islands. It is the island where Pedro Leitão Brito was born and spent his early years.

Bubista’s playing career
Before moving into coaching, Bubista enjoyed a solid career as a defender. He represented the Cape Verde national team 28 times after making his international debut in 1991.
At club level, he featured for several teams, including Spain’s Badajoz, Portugal’s Estoril, Angola’s ASA, and Cape Verdean side Falcões do Norte.
His journey as Cape Verde coach
Bubista took charge of Cape Verde’s national team in January 2020 following successful spells with domestic clubs such as Mindelense, Sporting Praia, and Batuque.
Under his leadership, the Blue Sharks qualified for both the 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, with the team reaching the quarterfinals in the 2023 edition.

He also guided Cape Verde to its first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance, making the country the smallest nation to qualify for the tournament at the time. That distinction lasted only until Curaçao secured its own historic qualification a month later.
Cape Verde’s remarkable run ended against Argentina, but Bubista’s tactical approach and leadership have earned widespread praise, with many viewing the tournament as a landmark moment in the nation’s football history.
