Title race, relegation battle take centre stage as KPL season enters homestretch
By Joel Masibo, May 2, 2026The Football Kenya Federation Premier League season enters a decisive phase this weekend as Round 30 fixtures of the 2025/26 season promise thrilling encounters across the country, with key matches in both the title race and the relegation battle taking centre stage.
The action kicks off in the relegation fight on Saturday, May 2, 2026 with Sofapaka set to host Mathare United at the Kasarani Annex from 3:00 pm.
With Sofapaka, placed bottom of the table and needing maximum points to boost their survival hopes with five rounds left to go, a defeat or draw for the 2009 champions will automatically see them drop to the National Super League.
Speaking ahead of the game, Sofapaka captain Cliffton Miheso noted the growing concern around the relegation reality, but remained hopeful that a miracle could unfold.

”The survival chances are growing slim, but the boys have hope, and we are still working hard. What has been affecting us mostly in the league is defence. Earlier, it was the defence; we fixed it, but now, what is remaining is the attack. We need to score more goals. If you do not score goals, you do not win the games. Going into this game, we need to focus more on attack and have that composure and finish our chances. We are getting chances to score; the only thing remaining is to put the ball in the net. That has been our main undoing the whole of this season, but I think going into the fixture, we are going to see a different team,” Miheso said.
Sunday fixtures
On Sunday, May 3, 2026, attention shifts to two fixtures. Bidco United will face Kariobangi Sharks at Wang’uru Stadium starting at 2:00 pm.
Later in the day, Kakamega Homeboyz welcome league giants Gor Mahia at the Mumias Sports Complex from 3:00 PM in what is expected to be one of the standout matches of the round, in a match that could decide the title race.

The midweek fixtures scheduled for Wednesday, May 6, 2026, will wrap up Round 30 with a packed lineup. Coastal side Bandari FC will take on Posta Rangers at Kwale Stadium at 2:00 pm. At the same time, Kenya Police FC face Murang’a Seal at Police Sacco Stadium at the same time.
Elsewhere, APS Bomet host KCB FC at Green Stadium, Kericho, from 3:00 pm, while Nairobi United will battle Tusker FC at Nyayo Stadium in a 4:00 pm kickoff.
With the title race, continental qualification spots, and relegation battles all still at stake, Round 30 could prove pivotal in shaping the final standings.
