Pyramids FC: A sneak peak of Gor Mahia’s opponents in CAF Champions League
By Joel Masibo, September 3, 2026Pyramids Football Club will be travelling to Nairobi to face Football Kenya Federation Premier League side Gor Mahia FC in a CAF Champions League first preliminary-round fixture on Sunday, September 6, 2026 at the Nyayo National Stadium.
Ahead of the mouthwatering clash, the Egyptian club, coached by South African tactician Rulani Mokwena, has undergone one of the most remarkable transformations in Egyptian football, evolving from a modest club in Upper Egypt into a major force on the domestic and continental stage.
The club, now based in New Cairo, was established in 2008 under the name Al Assiouty Sport in Assiut. Its fortunes changed dramatically a decade later when Saudi businessman Turki Al-Sheikh acquired the club in 2018 and relocated it to Cairo.
A year later, in July 2019, Emirati businessman Salem Al Shamsi became the club’s owner, ushering in another chapter in Pyramids’ rapid rise.
Today, Pyramids compete in the Egyptian Premier League, the top tier of Egyptian football. The club plays its home matches at the 30 June Stadium, which has a capacity of 30,000 spectators.
Rapid rise to the top
Despite their relatively short history, Pyramids have established themselves among Egypt’s leading clubs. Their progress has been particularly evident in recent seasons, as they have consistently challenged for major domestic honours.
The club’s breakthrough came in the Egypt Cup, where Pyramids secured their first major domestic trophy in the 2023–24 season. They subsequently added another Egypt Cup title in 2025–26.
Pyramids have also regularly finished near the top of the Egyptian Premier League. Although they have yet to win the league championship, they have finished as runners-up on several occasions, demonstrating their growing competitiveness against Egypt’s traditional football giants.
Their continental campaign has taken the club’s ambitions to another level.
Historic African success
Pyramids’ biggest achievement came in the 2024–25 CAF Champions League, when they captured their first continental title.
Winning Africa’s premier club competition represented a significant milestone for an organisation that had only been founded in 2008. The triumph confirmed Pyramids as an important force in African football and marked the culmination of years of investment and sporting development.
The club’s continental success continued with victory in the 2025 CAF Super Cup, adding another prestigious trophy to their growing collection.
Pyramids also claimed the 2025 FIFA African–Asian–Pacific Cup, further underlining the club’s emergence beyond the Egyptian domestic scene.
Club with growing ambitions
Pyramids are now led by chairman Mamdouh Eid.
The club’s rise has been built around significant investment, ambitious recruitment and an increasingly competitive squad. From its origins as Al Assiouty Sport in Assiut, Pyramids has developed into a club capable of competing for the biggest trophies in Egypt and Africa.
With two Egypt Cup titles, a CAF Champions League crown, a CAF Super Cup and the FIFA African–Asian–Pacific Cup already in the trophy cabinet, Pyramids’ achievements have far exceeded what might have been expected from a club established less than two decades ago.
With their 2026/27 continental campaign beginning with a test against Gor Mahia in Nairobi, the challenge now is to turn their rapid rise into sustained dominance, particularly by adding the CAF Champions League title to their collection and maintaining their position among Africa’s elite clubs.
