Together at Chelsea, now at Man City: Fernández excited after reunion with Maresca

Enzo Fernández has expressed his excitement at working with Enzo Maresca once again after completing his move to Manchester City on deadline day.
The Argentine midfielder officially joined City on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, signing a five-year contract as part of Maresca’s reshaped squad. His arrival follows the additions of Elliot Anderson, Gerónimo Rulli, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Iliman Ndiaye.
Fernández already knows Maresca well from their time together at Chelsea. During their spell at Stamford Bridge, the pair celebrated success in both the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.
The midfielder believes his previous experience under the Italian coach will help make his transition to Manchester easier, while also acknowledging Maresca’s role in making the transfer possible.
“He is a top manager, honestly,” Fernández said of Maresca.
“I had him at my previous club. They were incredible moments. I learned so much with him.
“He’s very similar to Latin people, very passionate. So, for me, it’s a pleasure to work with him.
“I’m also grateful because he was very important in bringing me here. So it’s a huge pleasure for me to work alongside him and enjoy it.
“To be honest, we were both very eager for it to happen, because it wasn’t easy for me to be here today.
“But I know he also made a big effort, speaking to the club, and I’m grateful that he did that.
“It was a long few days, but in the end I’m here and I’m very happy to be joining this club.” He said.
Fernández proud to follow Argentine legends
By moving to Manchester City, Fernández becomes the latest Argentine player to represent the club, joining a distinguished group that includes Sergio Agüero, Carlos Tevez, Pablo Zabaleta, Julián Álvarez, Nicolás Otamendi and Martín Demichelis.
The new City midfielder said he feels privileged to follow in the footsteps of those who have established strong Argentine connections with the club.
“To be honest, great Argentine players have come through here and made history, like Juli and Ota and the ones you mentioned,” he added.
“Manchester City, not only in Argentina but around the world, are one of the biggest clubs in the world. Everyone sees it that way.
“And even more so in Argentina, because so many players have come through here.
“So for me it’s a privilege to be here and give 100% every day, to take the club as high as possible.”
Reunion with Willy Caballero
Fernández will also be reunited with another familiar Argentine figure at City in assistant head coach Willy Caballero.
Caballero returned to Manchester City during the summer after previously making 48 appearances for the club as a goalkeeper. He played a key role in City’s 2013/14 League Cup triumph, particularly during the penalty shootout victories that helped secure the trophy.
The former goalkeeper also has a long-standing connection with Maresca, having played alongside the Italian at Málaga in Spain. He subsequently worked with both Maresca and Fernández during their Chelsea days.
Fernández is therefore looking forward to being around Caballero again and revealed that the pair remained in contact throughout the transfer process.
“I spoke with Willy many times, but yes, obviously, we were always in touch,” he added.
“I have a great relationship with him. He was always sending me messages, asking me whether the move was happening and whether I was coming.
“I’m very happy to be here and to be with them again.”
Fernández now begins a new chapter at Manchester City, where he will look to build on his previous achievements while contributing to Maresca’s plans and continuing the club’s strong tradition of Argentine players.
