Onana wraps up Trabzonspor loan spell amid Man Utd’s future uncertainty
By Joel Masibo, May 26, 2026Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has wrapped up his temporary spell at Turkish side Trabzonspor with his future at Old Trafford hanging in the balance.
The Cameroonian ended his loan move on a high after helping the Turkish side lift the Turkish Cup following a 2-1 win against Konyaspor on Friday, May 22, 2026 final.
The decisive goals were scored by former Southampton forward Paul Onuachu in what turned out to be Onana’s final appearance-related involvement during his season-long stay away from Old Trafford.
Since joining Trabzonspor on loan in September 2025, the Cameroon goalkeeper featured in 40 matches and capped off the campaign by helping the club secure their 10th Turkish Cup title. Only Galatasaray and Beşiktaş have collected more trophies in the competition’s history.
Although Onana was not involved in the opening five matches of the cup campaign, he became influential during the knockout stages. One of his standout moments came in the quarter-finals against Samsunspor, where he denied three penalties in a dramatic shootout victory.
Other United players’ success
The goalkeeper’s achievement adds to a successful season for several Manchester United players who spent time away on loan. Jadon Sancho recently celebrated UEFA Europa League glory with Aston Villa after appearing late in their commanding 3-0 victory over Freiburg in the final. The triumph marked Villa’s first major silverware since winning the 1996 League Cup.
Elsewhere, Marcus Rashford contributed to Barcelona’s successful La Liga title defence, while Rasmus Hojlund earned silverware with Napoli after they captured the Supercoppa Italiana in December.
There was also positive news for United academy midfielder Jacob Devaney, whose performances helped St Mirren avoid relegation from the Scottish Premiership. The Republic of Ireland youth international played every minute across both legs of the promotion-relegation play-off against Partick Thistle, with St Mirren progressing 2-1 on aggregate after a narrow victory in the return leg.
Meanwhile, Hull City secured promotion back to the Premier League with the help of Manchester United academy graduate Toby Collyer, who spent the second half of the season with the Tigers. Although injury ruled him out of the Championship play-off final at Wembley, Hull clinched victory over Middlesbrough thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Oli McBurnie, sealing a return to England’s top division after a nine-year absence.
