Mathare United return to action on Saturday, March 14, 2026, to end a two-week break and will welcome AFC Leopards at Nyayo Stadium in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League, starting at 3:30 pm local time.

The matchday 24 fixture offers John Kamau’s side the opportunity to return to winning ways and end a run of three matches without a win.
A lack of consistency has been the Slumboys’ biggest obstacle this term. And though the 2008 champions have daylight between them and the drop zone, they are not yet above looking over their shoulders as they enter the final stretch of the campaign.

Loking ahead

Ahead of the crunch tie against Ingwe, who are flying high in the league, left-back John Nyawir has acknowledged as much as he previews Saturday’s 3:30 pm kickoff.

“The two-week break has done a lot in terms of allowing us to get back to the drawing board and work towards a strong finish to the season. We’ve analysed our previous fixtures and understood where we went wrong and what we did right,” Nyawir told club media.

“Before we started the season, we set several targets which are all still attainable even with the sort of season we are having. At the moment, results have been against us, and sometimes it can affect the mentality and confidence of the group, especially with where we are on the table. But it is important to stay the course and keep reminding ourselves of the targets we set.”

In his tenure as a Slumboy, Nyawir has not been on the winning side against Leopards, losing both fixtures. Mathare United’s run without a win in this fixture goes back to before Nyawir joined the club, as their last win came in this very week three years ago.

Mathare United have lost the last three times they have been up against Leopards, with their last win in this fixture coming in the 2022/23 season.
A Chris Owino goal on 71 minutes proved to be the difference between the two sides at Kasarani Stadium.

Task at hand

As they seek to end a three-game losing run against Ingwe, Nyawir acknowledges the task at hand but believes this losing run in this fixture only inspires the team to head out in search of a win.

“We already know that it is not going to be an easy match. They are on form, and we aren’t. They have also been in strong form in this fixture, but this only adds to motivating us. Whenever you go into a fixture you haven’t won in in a while you tend to embrace the underdog tag. We are motivated and will play this game like a final. Every game to us from now until the end of the season is a final.”

Nyawir has missed the last two matches with a thigh injury, but has been in training with the rest of the group and might be involved on Saturday.
