Late own goal hands Gor Mahia vital FKF PL victory over Kakamega Homeboyz in Mumias

K’Ogalo found their breakthrough in improbable fashion via a late own goal from ex-Leopards player Peter Thiong’o. The match-winner occurred when an Ebenezer Assifuah cross inadvertently deflected off the striker and into the net.
The clash was a highly charged affair. Club patron Eliud Owalo had set the tempo, challenging faithful to turn up as the team prepared for the final stretch of the season, fuelled by the morale-boosting victory over AFC Leopards in the Mashemeji Derby on Sunday, April 26, 2026.
Tense opener
The first half was a tense encounter, with both sides carefully sizing up one another’s resolve. At the start of the second half, coach Charles Akonnor made two tactical changes, bringing on Ben Stanley and Samuel Kapen for the returning Sylvester Owino and Lawrence Juma.
Kapen made an immediate impact and nearly created the opener, but his cross was headed wide by Alpha Onyango. The match took a dramatic turn in the final minutes as Gor Mahia increased their attacking tempo.
Decisive strike
During one such foray, a cleared attempt fell to the newly introduced Assifuah; his shot toward the goal deflected off Thiong’o to finally break the hosts’ resistance.
With this win, Gor Mahia sits nine points clear at the top of the table, ahead of their closest challengers, AFC Leopards. The Green Army is now inches away from securing a record 22nd league title.
The race is not over
The win, Gor’s most important yet in their push for the league title, comes a day after Akonnor insisted that the league race remains far from over.
“I said in my last press conference before the AFC match that the run is not over, even with a win against AFC Leopards. We believe that it continues until the last match, when we are certain we have secured the title,” he posited on Saturday, May 2, 2026.
