Gor Mahia officially crowned 2025/26 FKF PL champions

Gor Mahia FC were crowned the new champions of Kenya in an electric atmosphere at the Nyayo National Stadium, capping off a hard-earned league crown.

Charles Akonnor’s side emerged as the eventual winners of a title race that was effectively decided with two fixtures left to play, courtesy of AFC Leopards’ loss to APS Bomet in the league’s penultimate fixture on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

That result left K’Ogalo with an unassailable lead at the top of the standings, and the club has since wrapped up their campaign with 69 points, five points superior to second-placed AFC Leopards.

The official coronation took place this Sunday, following a match that was momentarily dampened by Nairobi United’s 1-0 win over the newly crowned champions.

FKF President Hussein Mohammed, club patron Eliud Owalo, and league sponsor CEO Ronald Karauri presented the trophy to skipper Philemon Otieno.

It was a historic moment as the 22-time champions savoured domestic glory once again after a year-long wait.

“It’s over here at Nyayo Stadium… we lost the first match of the season, and now we have lost the last match of the season, but here we are as CHAMPIONS, bagging our 22nd league title—a record in the Kenyan Premier League. We are Mahia,” a statement from the club read.

Raila Odinga Junior, son of former club patron Raila Amollo Odinga, was also among the top dignitaries who met the players and technical staff before kickoff.

Mood for FKF climax

The carnival mood was captured long before the match even started. Gor Mahia faithful painted the Nairobi Central Business District green as early as noon, assembling at the Tom Mboya statue for a vibrant procession toward the stadium.

On the pitch, Gor Mahia accorded a fitting send-off comprising a guard of honour to two of its longest-serving players ahead of their final match for the club: Otieno and Ernest Wendo.

The skipper and veteran midfield general are departing after years of dedicated service spanning over 17 years between them.

The early stages of the celebration and the ensuing ceremony were orderly, as fans adhered to pleas from both the club and event organisers to remain in their designated seating areas during the trophy presentation rather than storming the pitch.
