Legends bow out! Gor Mahia bids farewell to long-serving stars after impressive careers
Gor Mahia FC have officially bid farewell to two of its long-serving players, Ernest Wendo and Philemon Otieno, who are set to depart the club after the Football Kenya Premier League final fixture against Nairobi United this Sunday, May 31, 2026.
The pair were treated to a guard of honour ahead of their final game for the club against the Naibois, marking the end of an era of dedicated service.
Wendo joined the club from Bidco United over a decade ago and went on to become a cult hero and a dependable midfield linchpin in the recent past.
Decorated careers
The burly, combative midfielder bows out after more than 11 years of consistent service, having marshalled the team’s midfield in CAF matches, local league engagements, and tournaments across the continent.
He previously also had stints with Mathare United in the top-tier league.
Meanwhile, Otieno arrived from Ushuru FC nine years ago. He was elevated to club captain at the start of the 2022 season, with Samuel Onyango named as his deputy. While he was initially rumored to be leaving in 2025, the club triggered a contract extension, committing him for another year.

Reflecting on last year on his eventual departure, the defender, affectionately known as ‘Mbish’ by his peers, made it clear he wanted to finish his tenure with Gor Mahia’s career on top.
“I thank the management for extending my contract to continue with my role as captain. Honestly, I would love to leave honourably here as a champion. I have won many trophies here, and it will be a good feeling to leave as a champion. Gor is like family, and I would like to leave as champions,” he said.
He added that he deeply cherished being part of the team’s leadership group.
Their departure marks the end of an era for two of the most decorated players, not just within K’Ogalo but across Kenyan football circles. Wendo boasts an incredible eight league titles to his name, while Otieno leaves with seven.
