CAF CL: Inside Gor Mahia’s preparations and targets ahead of Pyramids duel

Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has provided a snippet of K’Ogalo’s preparations and the general mood at the club ahead of their return to the CAF Champions League stage following a one-year absence.
The reigning Kenyan champions will face Egyptian giants Pyramids FC in the first preliminary round on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, seeking to overcome them in a two-legged tie to advance to the next round.
While acknowledging the quality possessed by the Egyptian side, Akonnor emphasised that Gor Mahia are focused on their own preparations and are ready to rise to the occasion.
Capable
“It is another opportunity to showcase what we have. We are doing it against a very good side, we are preparing adequately, and the players are getting it right. I believe we are capable of doing it,” Akonnor stated in an interview with the club on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

Akonnor acknowledged Pyramids as a formidable opponent but remained confident in his team’s readiness. He challenged his charges to remain disciplined and focused throughout the encounter, insisting that every detail could prove decisive in a high-level CAF fixture.
“Pyramids have good players and extensive experience in African competitions. We respect them, and this match will also give our players a chance to fight for their places in the national team,” he added.
“We have to be disciplined, stay together, and fight for every ball. If we do what we have been training and play with confidence, then we can get a positive result.”
“The preparations are going very well. We know we are facing a very good team—they are a very tough opponent, but we are also a good team, and we have been preparing well for this match.”
Gor heads into the clash with their tails up after receiving a timely boost following the return of two players who picked up injuries during the CECAFA tournament in Rwanda.

According to an update from the medical team on August 27, 2026, Patrick Essombe was declared fully fit for the encounter, with positive news about skipper Silvester Owino, who has been nursing a muscle injury, also being delivered.
“Patrick has fully recovered from his ankle injury and is now training well and available for selection,” Odongo said.
“Sylvester has made good progress following his calf muscle injury and is currently in the final phase of his rehabilitation with a focus on specific sport-related training as he works toward a full return to competitive football,” the doctor said.
