CAF Champions League: A look at Gor Mahia’s tough meetings with Egyptian opponents

Gor Mahia are set to renew their long-standing rivalry with Egyptian clubs when they face Pyramids FC in the CAF Champions League preliminary round first-leg meeting at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
The encounter will mark the fifth time the Kenyan giants have been drawn against an Egyptian side in continental competition, adding another chapter to a rivalry that has stretched across more than 50 years.
Before Pyramids FC emerged as their latest Egyptian opponents, Gor Mahia had faced Ismaily, Zamalek, ENPPI and Al Ahly, with the meetings producing a mixture of memorable results and difficult lessons for the Kenyan champions.
Ismaily provided Gor’s first Egyptian challenge
Gor Mahia’s first meeting with Egyptian opposition came in 1969 when they were drawn against Ismaily in the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Champions Clubs.
Ismaily secured a 3-1 victory in Cairo in the opening encounter, leaving Gor with a difficult task in the second leg in Nairobi.
K’Ogalo responded with a determined display, earning a 1-1 draw at home. Although the result was not enough to overturn the deficit, Ismaily advanced 4-2 on aggregate.
The tie nevertheless demonstrated that Gor Mahia could stand up against some of Africa’s leading clubs.
Zamalek encounters produced plenty of drama
Of all the Egyptian teams Gor Mahia have met, Zamalek have been their most frequent opponent.
Their first contest came in the 1984 African Cup of Champions Clubs. The tie ended controversially, with Zamalek being awarded the contest following protests by Gor Mahia players over the officiating.
The clubs crossed paths again a decade later. Gor held the Egyptian giants to a 1-1 stalemate in Nairobi before Zamalek edged the return match in Cairo 2-1.
Gor eventually secured a famous victory over Zamalek in the 1998 CAF Cup. Steve Okumu scored the decisive goal as K’Ogalo defeated the Egyptian side 1-0 in Nairobi.
However, Zamalek produced a commanding response in the return fixture, recording a 4-0 win in Cairo and progressing comfortably on aggregate.
Despite the eventual elimination, the encounters cemented Zamalek’s place among the most notable Egyptian opponents in Gor Mahia’s continental history.
ENPPI proved another challenging opponent
Gor Mahia’s next Egyptian assignment came against ENPPI during the first round of the 2013 CAF Confederation Cup.
The first leg in Cairo turned into a difficult outing for the Kenyan side, with ENPPI claiming a 3-0 victory.
Gor attempted to overturn the deficit in Nairobi but were unable to find the breakthrough, settling for a goalless draw in the return match.
ENPPI therefore secured a 3-0 aggregate victory and advanced to the next stage.
Al Ahly added another tough test
Gor Mahia’s most recent Egyptian opponent before Pyramids was Al Ahly, whom they encountered in the 2024/25 CAF Champions League.
The Kenyan side faced a formidable task against the record African champions and ultimately suffered defeats in both legs, with Al Ahly winning each encounter by at least three goals.
The results underlined the difficulty Gor Mahia have historically faced against Egyptian clubs, although their record also includes several strong performances on home soil.
Pyramids bring a different challenge
Pyramids FC arrive in Nairobi with considerable continental credentials of their own.
The Egyptian club captured their first CAF Champions League title in 2025 after overcoming Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 on aggregate. Their triumph made them only the fourth Egyptian club to lift Africa’s premier club competition.
That achievement gives Charles Akonnor’s Gor Mahia a particularly demanding assignment.
The first leg is scheduled for Nyayo Stadium on September 6, 2026, with the return match set for Cairo on September 13, 2026.
Gor Mahia will draw confidence from their previous home displays against Egyptian opposition, as well as their memorable 1-0 victory over Zamalek in 1998.
At the same time, their history against Egyptian clubs serves as a reminder of the quality they will face.
Pyramids will therefore become the fifth Egyptian club to meet Gor Mahia in continental competition. K’Ogalo will be hoping this latest encounter produces a more favourable outcome and gives them a strong foundation ahead of the trip to Egypt.
A positive result in Nairobi could significantly boost Gor’s confidence before the second leg, while eliminating the reigning African champions would rank among the club’s most impressive continental accomplishments in recent years.
