Kenya Volleyball Federation announces new guidelines on referee appointments

The Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) has announced new guidelines on the appointment of referees for its league matches, tournaments, and other sanctioned competitions following a resolution made by the National Executive Committee (NEC).

In an official circular issued by KVF Secretary General Ismail Chege on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, the federation confirmed that the new directive was agreed upon during the NEC meeting held on March 7, 2026, and will take immediate effect across all KVF competitions.

Selection criteria

According to the circular, referees selected to officiate matches will be drawn from those who meet the qualification standards set by both the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) and KVF. This move aims to ensure that only certified and competent officials handle matches in the federation’s competitions.

The federation further clarified that qualified referees will have the freedom to attend and officiate at any volleyball tournament or activity of their choosing. This provision is expected to offer referees greater flexibility while ensuring that tournaments have access to trained officials.

In addition, the nomination of referees for specific assignments will now be conducted on the day of the championship from among those present at the venue.

”Referees will be appointed from among those who meet the FIVB/ KVF referee qualifications. Qualified referees are free to attend and officiate at any tournament or volleyball activity of their own choice. Nominations will be conducted on the day of the championship from among the referees present at the venue,” the statement said in part.

Streamlining officiating

The approach, KVF noted, is intended to streamline officiating arrangements and ensure that available qualified referees can be deployed efficiently during competitions. The directive applies to all KVF league matches, tournaments, and any volleyball competitions sanctioned by the federation.

KVF has also urged all referees and relevant officials to take note of the new regulations and comply accordingly as the federation seeks to improve the organisation and management of volleyball competitions in the country.

”This directive takes effect immediately and shall apply to all KVF league, tournaments or sanctioned competitions and assignments.

All concerned officials and referees are requested to take note and comply accordingly.” It added.
