Hussein Mohammed defies suspension over CHAN insurance scandal

The embattled Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has defied his suspension from office by a section of the federation’s National Executive Committee members on Friday, April 24, 2026, over purported Ksh42 million 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) insurance scandal.

The federation is further facing fresh turmoil following a defiance by Mohammed, distancing himself from a controversial NEC meeting held on April 24, 2026, that saw the recently installed acting CEO, Dennis Gicheru, who replaced Harold Ndege in the role after the latter’s fallout with Mohammed, and member Yusuf Ibrahim also suspended pending full investigations.

The committee has, in the interim, directed Deputy President McDonald Mariga to take over the affairs of the federation.

“With immediate effect, Mr. Hussein Rashid Mohammed will step aside from his role and position as President of the Football Kenya Federation; Abdullahi Yusuf Ibrahim will step aside from his role as a nominated member of the Football Kenya Federation National Executive Committee; and Mr. Dennis Gicheru will step aside from his position and role as the Acting General Secretary of FKF,” part of the resolutions signed by nine of the 14 members on Friday, April 24, 2026, reads.

Hussein stays put

In the official communication dated Friday, April 24, 2026, Hussein firmly disowned the NEC meeting, terming it “irregular, unlawful and unconstitutional.” He argued that the meeting failed to meet the requirements outlined in the FKF Constitution (2017), rendering any decisions made during the session null and void.

Citing Article 38, Clause 2 of the FKF Constitution, Hussein emphasised that only the president has the authority to convene NEC meetings. The provision also allows members to convene a meeting themselves only if at least 50 percent formally request it and the president fails to act within 21 days.

“I did not convene any NEC meeting, nor did I receive any request to convene such a meeting in accordance with the above provisions,” Hussein stated, raising questions about the legitimacy of the gathering that reportedly led to the suspensions.

Laying it bare

The embattled FKF boss further announced that he would address the media comprehensively on the matter on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at the federation’s headquarters, signaling a possible escalation in the standoff between top football administrators.

The unfolding saga has cast a shadow over preparations and governance within Kenyan football, with stakeholders now keenly watching how the federation navigates the dual crises of leadership wrangles and financial accountability tied to the CHAN insurance controversy.

With the integrity of decision-making structures under scrutiny, the FKF faces mounting pressure to restore order, transparency, and adherence to its constitutional framework, especially as the country races against time to host another major continental tournament, the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, alongside Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, with preparations already in top gear.
