HSBC SVNS 2: Kenya finish 3rd after loss to USA

Kenya’s national rugby sevens team, the Shujaa, saw their remarkable winning streak come to an end at the HSBC SVNS 2 tournament in Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, February 15, 2026, finishing third after a heartbreaking 21–5 loss to the USA.
The match against the USA started with promise for the home side, but the Americans quickly showcased a solid defensive strategy that kept Kenya at bay.
Lucas Lacamp broke through the defensive line early to score the opening try, giving the USA a slim lead at halftime.
Kenya struggled to regain momentum in the second half as the Americans capitalised on a penalty, extending their advantage through a powerful lineout move finished by Aaron Cummings.
Adam Channel then sealed the win, leaving Kenya with only a late consolation try by George Ooro after a break from inside his own 22.
Men’s team shines despite loss
Despite the defeat, Kenya’s men’s team displayed moments of brilliance throughout the tournament. They had previously beaten Canada and Germany, demonstrating their attacking flair and resilience, but the loss to the USA proved costly in the standings.

Germany eventually claimed the men’s title, finishing on top after edging out Belgium in a tightly contested match, while the USA settled for second.
The defeat marked Kenya’s first loss in the tournament and ended a 27-match unbeaten run stretching back to 2021, a streak that had made the team one of the most dominant sides in the sevens circuit.
Women’s side struggles
On the women’s side, Argentina emerged as champions despite a dramatic golden-time loss to South Africa in the final round.
Kenya Lionesses struggled throughout the tournament, finishing fifth after a 14–5 defeat to Spain in their final match. Their campaign highlighted areas for growth, though they showed flashes of potential against some of the top teams.

The two-day HSBC SVNS 2 Nairobi event, which started on Saturday, February 14, 2026, brought together strong squads from Africa, Europe, and beyond, offering fans thrilling contests and showcasing the depth of talent in the sevens format.
While the third-place finish will leave Kenyan fans disappointed, the result keeps the Shujaa in contention for promotion within the new World Rugby SVNS structure.
Teams that perform consistently across the Division 2 series, including the top four men’s and women’s squads, can advance to the World Championship stage, where they compete against Division 1 nations.
