FKF sheds light on unpaid Harambee Starlets arrears

By , March 23, 2026

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has issued an official explanation regarding the status of Harambee Starlets players’ allowances, which currently remain in arrears.

The Starlets have outstanding payments from recent international friendlies, which were part of their preparations for the rescheduled 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Pending dues

Speaking in an interview on Monday, March 23, 2026, FKF President Hussein Mohammed acknowledged the pending dues but clarified that the matter falls under the government’s jurisdiction.

He noted that while the team continues to focus on their quest for the WAFCON quest, the federation has initiated processes to resolve these financial hurdles.

“We are pursuing the matter as a federation with the Ministry of Sports and the Sports Fund. The request has been active for a while and is being addressed as we speak,” Mohammed stated.

“If it were up to the federation, we would have settled them already. However, it is the government, through the Ministry of Sports, that pays these allowances.”

He further emphasised that the delay lies beyond the federation’s direct control, as player remuneration for national assignments is handled squarely by the state.

“It is important to clarify that the federation does not pay these allowances; it is the government that manages those disbursements,” he added.

Women’s funds row

His remarks come after he also disclosed that the federation is yet to receive any funding regarding the controversial Women Development Fund kitty.

The status of the said fund has been the bone of contention in an ongoing controversy pitting the federation against a section of the Kenya Women’s Premier League (KWPL) clubs.

The matter sparked boycotts by a section of KWPL teams in recent weeks, which the FKF boss has since addressed.

Not received any monies

“It is important to be honest and genuine; the truth is that, to date, we have not received any monies for the women’s development kitty since we took office,” Mohammed stated.

“Right now, we are finalising a strategic plan to submit to FIFA to unlock the funds once we have met all the necessary requirements.”

He further challenged critics to provide evidence of the alleged disbursements:

“I challenge anybody who can state the contrary to show me where that money is,” he explained.
