FKF PL Preview: The numbers behind Gor Mahia-Shabana rivalry
By Luke Oluoch, March 21, 2026FKF PL leaders, Gor Mahia, welcome Shabana FC this Saturday, March 21, 2026, at the Nyayo National Stadium for an important league clash.
K’Ogalo sits atop the league standings with 53 points, seven points ahead of AFC Leopards, with Shabana coming in at a distant third.
The Glamour Boys, who recently parted ways with coach Peter Okidi, head into the clash seeking to bounce back after recent losses against AFC Leopards and Kariobangi Sharks.
Unfavourable history
Their task is cut out as they seek to put behind them an unfavourable history against Gor Mahia.
The Gusii-based side has managed only 4 wins against Gor in 41 matches, a record that stretches back to 1985, when they earned their maiden top-flight status.
Gor has dominated the meeting between them with 25 victories and only 12 draws in the period.
The first-ever meeting between the pair ended in a 3–1 victory, with George Onyango “Fundi”, Hesbon Omollo and Gideon Hamisi on target, while Henry Motego netted Shabana’s consolation.
In the return leg in Kisii, the Obwaka brothers; William Obwaka and Enock Obwaka, delivered a 2–0 win to complete a commanding double.
First win
Shabana’s first taste of victory against Gor happened in the second leg of 1988, coming courtesy of Richard Otambo’s all-important goal in a 1–0 result.
Following their promotion back to the top flight in 2023, Tore Bobe’s second-fiddle nature to Gor Mahia has continued unabated, with the latter currently on a seven-match unbeaten run.
In the five fixtures in that span, the record 21 KPL champions have won five times and drawn twice.

The stats aside, the encounter promises to live up to its billing with plenty at stake that could ultimately shape the top end of the table.
Charles Akonnor’s charges seek to close in on the 2026 title, with Shabana hoping to make a statement after a spate of recent inconsistencies.
Akonnor on Shabana
Speaking on Friday, March 20, 2026, the Ghanaian trainer remained adamant that his team remain focused on their game and not happenings around the rival camp
“It is a very important match. We will have to do our best to keep our levels and momentum that we have been maintaining in previous matches. We are looking forward to making sure we get a positive point,” he stated.
“Unfortunately, their coach is no more there, but we are focused on ourselves and what we want to do. We have watched them one or two times,” he added.
The clash kicks off at 4:15 pm
