FKF Cup: Dark horses BB Bread bundle Gor Mahia out after serving AFC Leopards knockout blow

By , March 8, 2026

Lower-tier side BB Bread has extended its giant-slaying run in the Football Kenya Federation Cup with a stunning upset of Gor Mahia in the Round of 32 at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, March 8, 2026.

The minnows’ side saved the best for last, with Dennis Muthini’s 84th-minute goal serving the bitter exit to the FKF PL side, who also fell to a shocking exit as fellow league rivals, AFC Leopards.

The heartbreaking finale sealed a second unsuccessful attempt for the cup as BB Bread, the now dark horses of the competition, completed another stunning upset of the high-flying side to advance to the last 16 of the cup.

Bullish BB Bread

The game pre-match revolved around the team’s official talk, where BB Bread remained bullish of a giant-slaying sequel after edging AFC Leopards in the preliminary stage.

True to their word, the Nairobi Regional League side delivered with yet another battling performance to stun the 2025 finalists and send them packing.

Gor Mahia proved the dominant side in the opening exchanges, with BB Bread content to sit back and secure their goal.

A resolute performance saw the away side stay in the game with a couple of saves from their keeper.

Charles Akonnor entrusted a changed team for the tie. Defender Mike Kibwage was among the new starters coming in for Sylvester Owino, while regular goalkeepers Gad Mathews and Byrne Omondi missed out, with Kevin Omondi starting between the posts.

In the attack, Bryson Wangai, Ben Stanley, and Elly Owande led the line.

Elusive

The seamless coordination of Gor’s league run proved elusive in the cagey first half.

Akonnor resumed the final half with a couple of alterations, with Skipper Philemon Otieno and Elly Owade making way for regulars Musa Shariff and Paul Ochuoga.

The changes inspired little in terms of action at goal, with the BB keeper only troubled by Jackson Dwang’s set piece that he comfortably parried out.

Further changes saw Gor exhaust their subs in the 73rd minute.

The match’s turning point came in the final ten.

BB Bread’s opener

BB Bread seized their chance from a rare attack to commit men forward. The call proved pivotal, with Muthini grabbing a crucial lead from a well-taken low drive past Omondi.

The moment of pure ecstasy aroused the sizeable fans of the visiting team, who joined the players’ celebration as Gor Mahia fans watched in disbelief at what was unravelling in front of their very eyes.
