Tottenham suffer back-to-back losses after defeat to Newcastle
By Luke Oluoch, August 29, 2026Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle claimed his first Premier League victory with goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa at Tottenham Hotspur, who lost their second league game this season on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
There had not been a goalless draw between these clubs since the top flight was rebranded as the Premier League in 1992, and Elanga broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute.
New signing Nico Gonzalez, making his Magpies debut following his £52m move from Manchester City, started the move with a superb crossfield pass to Amar Dedic, who headed the ball into Elanga’s path.
The Swede, who also scored in the Magpies’ 2-2 draw with Liverpool, created space away from former Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, spun and shot at goal, with the ball going in off the post.
Newcastle doubled their lead 10 minutes later when Wissa acrobatically hooked the ball into the net after Nick Woltemade headed a corner towards the striker.
Tottenham striker Omar Marmoush, making his debut on loan from Manchester City, had one of the best chances when it was 0-0, but from the side of the six-yard box could only sidefoot wide unmarked.
Italy midfielder Tonali played against Newcastle for the first time since becoming Spurs’ record signing in a Ksh17.59 billion move in the summer after three years with the Magpies.
He was booed relentlessly by the away supporters, who took great delight in waving him off the pitch when he was substituted for Dominic Solanke with Newcastle 2-0 up.
Magpies up to fourth
The three-point lift puts Newcastle fourth in the table, while Tottenham are yet to score a league goal this season and are bottom.
Spurs have finished 17th in the Premier League the past two seasons, staying up on the final day of 2025-26.
But hopes were high for a much-improved campaign after manager Roberto De Zerbi spent over Ksh52.77 billion in the summer, more than any other team.
Yet, after an awful performance in the 3-0 loss at Brentford last week, Tottenham followed that up with another defeat, with thousands of fans leaving the ground before the final whistle.
Winger Savio, known as Savinho while at Manchester City before his Ksh13.19 billion summer move, had made an impressive debut, scoring in the midweek 5-1 Carabao Cup victory over Charlton, but was ruled out because of what De Zerbi called “muscle fatigue”.
Missed chances
Striker Richarlison and midfielder James Maddison were also not included, but De Zerbi will be worried by the number of chances Spurs missed while they also conceded goals to both shots on target that Newcastle registered.
Marmoush should have hit the target but volleyed wide in the first half and also fired wide after a bright run from the halfway line and later had an effort comfortably saved by Lukas Hornicek.
Pedro Porro, playing in a more advanced position than normal at right wing, had several opportunities but had one shot blocked by a sliding Lewis Miley and another effort tipped over.
Substitute Dominic Solanke flicked the ball goalwards late on, only for Lewis Hall to clear off the line on another frustrating evening.
Spurs have now only won three of their past 23 home league games. Any pre-season optimism has gone.
