Real Madrid open discussion with Man City over Rodri’s move

Spanish giants have opened discussions with Manchester City over the move for Spain World Cup-winning skipper Rodri.
According to reports on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, negotiations have started with verbal discussions between clubs after Madrid President Florentino Pérez approved the deal.
This comes after months of closed-door meetings in Madrid exploring the feasibility of the deal.
Los Blancos have had a long-term interest in signing the 30-year-old to add to the array of stars arriving at the club ahead of Jose Mourinho’s second return, and are understood to have upped their chase after Paris Saint-Germain dropped interest to pursue a move for the veteran enforcer.
The Parisians under Luis Enrique have been deemed content with their current options, with the trio of Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz, and Joao Neves at their disposal in the midfield.
With a year left on his contract, City remain determined to keep their World Cup-winner and have stated that they want him to sign new terms amid interest from Spain.
The midfielder is currently injured and is set to miss the start of the season as he recovers from a back surgery he underwent on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
Surgery
The Premier League club said the Spain international had been experiencing discomfort in his back for some time before undergoing the procedure.
“The surgery was successful, and Rodri will now begin a short period of rehabilitation,” City said in a statement.
City coach Enzo Maresca had said earlier that Rodri needed time to rest and recover before returning to the squad.
The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons, including a torn anterior cruciate ligament that sidelined him for most of the 2024-25 campaign.
Rodri’s situation could also trigger movement elsewhere in the transfer market. The report suggests Real Madrid’s plans regarding midfielders Aurélien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga may depend on whether they succeed in bringing Rodri to the Santiago Bernabéu. Both French internationals have previously attracted interest from several Premier League clubs.
