Manchester City midfielder Rodri undergoes back surgery

Manchester City confirmed on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, that midfielder Rodri has undergone successful back surgery and will begin rehabilitation, with no timetable set for his return.
The Premier League club said the Spain international had been experiencing discomfort in his back for some time before undergoing the procedure.
“The surgery was successful, and Rodri will now begin a short period of rehabilitation,” City said in a statement.
City coach Enzo Maresca had said earlier that Rodri needed time to rest and recover before returning to the squad.
The club is scheduled to face Arsenal in the Community Shield on August 16 before opening its Premier League season against Bournemouth on August 23. City has not indicated whether Rodri will be available for either match.
Rodri, whose contract expires at the end of the season, helped Spain win the FIFA World Cup earlier this month and was named the tournament’s best player.
The 30-year-old has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons, including a torn anterior cruciate ligament that sidelined him for most of the 2024-25 campaign.

Meanwhile, the summer transfer window continues to gather pace, with Rodri emerging as one of the biggest names in the latest round of transfer speculation.
According to the Daily Mail, the Spain international is reportedly keen on a move to Real Madrid following his successful FIFA World Cup campaign with La Roja. Rodri has long been regarded as one of the world’s best holding midfielders, and the Spanish giants are said to be monitoring his situation closely.
However, any potential transfer could face a significant obstacle. Reports from The Athletic claim the City midfielder is expected to undergo surgery to address a back injury, a development that could delay or even complicate any negotiations over his future.
Rodri’s situation could also trigger movement elsewhere in the transfer market. The report suggests Real Madrid’s plans regarding midfielders Aurélien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga may depend on whether they succeed in bringing Rodri to the Santiago Bernabéu. Both French internationals have previously attracted interest from several Premier League clubs.
