Liverpool transfer news: Update on Mbaye, Zabarnyi and Barcola as Reds’ depth raises concerns

The latest developments in Liverpool’s summer transfer activity suggest the club is continuing to explore several options as preparations for the new season gather pace under head coach Andoni Iraola.
One of the newest names linked with a move to Anfield is Paris Saint-Germain defender Ilya Zabarnyi. Reports indicate the Ukrainian international has been offered to Liverpool after discussions took place between his representatives and the club.
Zabarnyi only arrived at PSG from Bournemouth last summer in a deal worth around £53.6 million (Ksh9 billion), but despite being a regular starter in Ligue 1, he struggled for consistent opportunities in European matches. The 23-year-old is believed to be considering a move where he can secure a more prominent role.
Although Liverpool have shown interest, the Reds are reportedly treating Zabarnyi as a possible option for the later stages of the transfer window rather than an immediate priority. PSG would also expect to recover a large portion of the fee they paid for the defender.
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s pursuit of PSG winger Bradley Barcola remains their biggest transfer objective. Negotiations between the two clubs have officially begun after the Merseyside outfit submitted an opening offer believed to exceed £85.7 million (Ksh14.91 billion). However, the French champions are holding firm on a valuation of approximately £145 million (Ksh25.23 billion), meaning talks are expected to continue before any agreement can be reached.
Liverpool are also keeping tabs on another PSG youngster, Ibrahim Mbaye. The 18-year-old Senegalese winger is viewed as a more affordable attacking option who could either provide competition for Barcola or serve as an alternative if negotiations become too difficult. Interest from several Premier League clubs has also increased the competition for his signature.
In defence, the Reds are assessing additional reinforcements amid concerns over their current centre-back options. Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio has emerged as a player of interest after reportedly receiving the backing of Iraola. The Spanish defender, valued at around £34 million (Ksh5.92 billion), is being considered as Liverpool weigh up possible solutions to strengthen their back line ahead of the new campaign.
Munoz arrives
Meanwhile, Victor Munoz has arrived at Anfield. The club’s new Liverpool’s No.23 trained with his Reds teammates for the first time on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, fresh from becoming a World Cup winner with Spain.
Munoz completed his transfer to Anfield from Osasuna in June and enjoyed a short break following his role as a squad member with his country this summer.
