Manchester City have officially announced the signing of England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest in a deal reported to be worth £116 million (Ksh20.42 billion), as the midfielder quickly aimed a slight dig at Manchester United, who were also chasing his signature.

The transfer had already been agreed earlier this month, but Anderson’s official presentation was postponed because he was representing England at the FIFA World Cup. The 23-year-old has now put pen to paper on a five-year contract that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2031.

His departure ends a successful two-year spell at Nottingham Forest, during which he featured 92 times in all competitions.

Anderson explains why he chose Manchester City

Although Anderson had also attracted interest from Manchester United, the midfielder admitted his mind was made up as soon as City came calling.

“City are one of the biggest clubs in the world and the squad they have is amazing, so strong in every position,” Anderson said.

“As soon as I knew they wanted me, I was absolutely determined to make this move happen.

“As a footballer, you want to test yourself at the highest level. Being at City means I have that opportunity.”

After helping England reach the World Cup semi-finals, Anderson will take a short holiday before joining his new teammates in Manchester next month.

Looking ahead to the challenge, he added: “As soon as I arrive in Manchester after a break, I will be doing everything I can to establish myself in the City team.

“It’s a club built to win trophies and compete at the very top of the game. That is exciting for any footballer.

“I am so happy to have been given this opportunity, and I am determined to repay the faith City have shown in me.”

Midfielder aims dig at United ahead of derby clashes

The England international has already delighted City supporters by describing the club as the dominant force in Manchester while speaking about the famous derby against United.

“Yeah, it’s one of the biggest derbies in the world and for as long as I’ve known Manchester, City have been the Kings of Manchester,” Anderson said.

“It’ll be a great fixture, and I can’t wait to be involved in something like that.”

Anderson is expected to experience his first Manchester derby when City travel to Old Trafford on September 13, with the return Premier League meeting scheduled for March 20, 2027.
