Friday traffic nightmare: Motorists stuck for hours on Kiambu Road as weekend rush peaks

Motorists heading out for the weekend were left stranded for hours along Kiambu Road on the evening of Friday, September 25, 2026, as heavy traffic brought movement on the busy route to a crawl.
A video shared online showed long lines of vehicles packed tightly along the road, with dozens of motorists forced to remain behind the wheel as traffic moved only painfully slowly.
The footage captured rows of cars with their brake lights glowing as drivers waited for the jam to ease, with some vehicles remaining stationary for extended periods before inching forward by only a short distance.
The congestion was so severe that some motorists appeared unable to reach or make their intended exits, leaving them trapped within the growing lines of traffic as the evening rush intensified.
Vehicles could be seen packed closely together with little room for drivers to manoeuvre, while those attempting to find alternative ways out were forced to wait for even the smallest gaps to appear.
For motorists who had planned to get home or head out for weekend plans, the journey quickly turned into a frustrating wait as the normally busy road became heavily congested.
The video further showed boda boda riders taking advantage of the limited spaces between the stationary vehicles as they attempted to navigate through the traffic.
Some riders could be seen carefully squeezing between cars that had barely moved, looking for gaps through which they could make progress while motorists remained stuck.
The riders repeatedly weaved through the lines of vehicles, using spaces that were too narrow for most cars as they attempted to bypass sections of the jam.
As the traffic continued to worsen, the movement of vehicles became increasingly difficult, with cars appearing to advance only a few metres at a time before coming to another stop.
The worsening situation left motorists with little room to manoeuvre, particularly in sections where the tightly packed vehicles made it difficult to change lanes or access exits.
The heavy congestion came as Nairobi motorists began making their way out for the weekend, with Friday evening traffic traditionally placing additional pressure on major roads leading into and out of the city.
