Chelsea sign defender Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano
By Joel Masibo, August 12, 2026Chelsea have officially announced the arrival of Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria, completing their search for another option on the left side of defence.
The move comes after Marc Cucurella departed Stamford Bridge for Real Madrid, prompting Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso to look for a player capable of filling a similar role.
Chavarria quickly became the preferred candidate after impressing during Rayo Vallecano’s run to last season’s Conference League final.
Negotiations over the transfer fee took some time, but the two clubs eventually reached an agreement. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that Chelsea will pay €19m (£16.23m) (Ksh2.823 billion) upfront, while another €2m (£1.71m) (Ksh297.54 million) could be paid through performance-related add-ons.
Chavarria explains why he chose Chelsea
The 26-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year deal and revealed that the opportunity to work with Alonso played an important role in his decision to join the Premier League club.
Speaking through Chelsea’s official channels, Chavarria said: “I’m so excited to get started. This is a dream for me as Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world.
“It is a big opportunity but I am prepared and will work hard to help the team achieve success.
“There are a lot of people who have helped me get to this moment and I have to thank my family. They have always supported me and today is only possible because of them.”
The defender also discussed his admiration for Alonso’s football philosophy and what the Chelsea boss expects from him.
On Alonso, Chavarria added: “‘I’m a player that loves this intensity, one-to-one battles – I love it. Xabi was a top player, and now, for me, he’s one of the best managers in the world.
“I spoke to him, and he explained his ideas and how I can fit into that. He wants my intensity, those one-on-ones, box-to-box attacking and defending runs, and this is how I play.”
How much will Chavarria feature for Chelsea?
Chavarria could initially find himself competing for minutes as he adjusts to the demands of English football.
Should Alonso favour a conventional four-man defence, Jorrel Hato or Marco Palestra could be ahead of the new signing in the pecking order.
However, the Spaniard may have greater opportunities if Alonso opts for a system featuring wing-backs. Palestra could operate on the right in such a formation, potentially opening up the left flank for Chavarria.
Geovany Quenda is another player capable of covering either side, meaning Chavarria will face strong competition for a regular starting position.
Chelsea have nevertheless brought him in because of his physical approach, intensity and willingness to contribute throughout the flank.
During his time with Rayo Vallecano, Chavarria recorded two goals and eight assists in 125 appearances. Of his 91 starts for the Spanish side, only nine came in a wing-back or winger role, suggesting that he has primarily operated as a traditional full-back.
