Chelsea close in on Maxence Lacroix as defensive rebuild gathers pace

Chelsea are edging closer to completing the signing of Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix, with the French defender expected to undergo a medical on Friday before sealing his move to Stamford Bridge.
According to reports, the two clubs are finalising the final aspects of a deal valued at around £52 million (Ksh9.26 billion), with Lacroix set to commit his future to the Blues on a contract running until June 2032.
The 26-year-old has emerged as one of Chelsea’s priority defensive targets after impressing during two strong Premier League campaigns at Crystal Palace. His pace, ability to defend one-on-one situations and growing leadership qualities have convinced the west London club that he is the right addition to strengthen Xabi Alonso’s backline.
Chelsea have been negotiating with Palace for several days over a permanent transfer. Palace were initially believed to be seeking a fee higher than the £55 million Tottenham paid Brighton for Jan Paul van Hecke, although discussions have continued thanks to the strong relationship between the two clubs. Previous business between the sides has included transfers involving Trevoh Chalobah and Ben Chilwell.
The Blues are determined to recruit a commanding central defender with Premier League experience as Alonso reshapes his squad ahead of the new campaign. Their transfer activity has been helped by player sales worth approximately £130 million this summer, with additional departures still anticipated.
Preseason preps
Meanwhile, Chelsea maintained their encouraging pre-season form by beating League One outfit Bromley 3-0 in a closed-door friendly. Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens and Emmanuel Emegha all found the net as Alonso’s side extended their unbeaten run before embarking on a pre-season tour of Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malaysia, beginning with a clash against Western Sydney Wanderers on July 28.
Elsewhere, Chelsea have allowed Alejandro Garnacho to join Aston Villa on a season-long loan. The agreement includes a conditional obligation to make the transfer permanent, with the overall package matching Chelsea’s valuation of the winger.
Garnacho, who arrived from Manchester United for £40 million last summer, had not reported for Chelsea’s pre-season preparations while working towards a move away from the club. Manchester United are also set to benefit financially if the transfer becomes permanent due to a 10 per cent sell-on clause.
Chelsea are also reportedly leading the race to sign Kerim Alajbegovic from Bayer Leverkusen. The highly-rated 18-year-old attacking midfielder enhanced his reputation with impressive performances for Bosnia and Herzegovina at the World Cup and is believed to carry a price tag of around £30 million, despite interest from Juventus.
The London club’s busy summer has already seen them complete a record-breaking £117 million move for England international Morgan Rogers, making him the most expensive British footballer in history. Rogers has signed a seven-year contract after arriving from Aston Villa, surpassing the previous British transfer record set earlier this summer.
With several high-profile arrivals and departures taking shape, Chelsea continue to be among the Premier League’s busiest clubs as Alonso prepares for his first season in charge.
