Carrick explains how Baleba completes Man Utd’s midfield makeover
By Luke Oluoch, August 29, 2026Michael Carrick has expressed his optimism and delight over Manchester United’s new-look midfield following the arrival of Carlos Baleba, who was confirmed as the club’s latest summer addition for the 2026/27 campaign.
The 22-year-old midfielder was officially announced as a Manchester United player on August 25, 2026, after agreeing to a contract running until June 2031, with the club holding an option to extend the deal by a further 12 months.
Speaking to Sky Sports on Saturday, August 29, 2026, Carrick emphasised that the squad needed fresh energy and new dynamics to cope with the heavy demands of both the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

The manager particularly lauded the explosive power and physicality of the Cameroonian international following his impressive spell at Brighton:
Lots of potential
“We are delighted to have Carlos and welcome him to the club. He brings a lot: he is fantastic, at the right age, possesses great strength, knows the league, and has performed very well in it. He has immense potential and will bring great balance to our midfield.”
The former Brighton ace joins a central unit that already includes Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte, and Mason Mount—a department that previously relied on a mix of seasoned veterans and versatile creators, where defensive depth and physical coverage were often pain points.

With Baleba complementing recent acquisitions of Youri Tielemans and Brazilian star Andrey Santos from Chelsea, Carrick highlighted the importance of blending youthful vigour with proven experience:
“It is important for the players to understand each other and build the dynamics we expect from them—to be able to play together, combine well, and understand what the team requires,” Carrick stated. “I am excited by that part of the squad and confident we can improve significantly to push through the season.”
