Enzo Fernández voices readiness to justify his Ksh21B price tag after transfer from Chelsea

Following his high-profile, record-breaking deadline-day Ksh21.87 billion transfer from Chelsea, the Argentine midfielder admitted he feels deeply indebted to the City hierarchy for making the move happen.
Fernández marked his second appearance for the club with his first goal involvement, setting up Erling Haaland just 90 seconds into the second half against Porto. City went on to secure a 2-0 victory at the Estádio do Dragão on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
The goal marked Haaland’s 36th in the UEFA Champions League for Manchester City, bringing him level with Sergio Agüero as the club’s joint-highest goalscorer in the competition.
Speaking after the match, Fernández expressed his delight at partnering with the striker and praised the warm welcome he has received since arriving in Manchester.
Feeling at home
“I am so happy with the reception I received when I arrived. Their kindness made me feel at home right away—it was a very special feeling. Beyond being brilliant players, everyone here is a fantastic person.”
Fernández was full of praise for Haaland’s instinct in front of goal:
“Haaland is a beast, an animal. That was my first assist for him, and I hope I can find him many more times in the future.”
The midfielder also highlighted his strong bond with manager Enzo Maresca, whom he reunited with following their time together at Chelsea:
“The manager has done so much for me and my family. He knows me very well from our time at Chelsea, and I am so happy he did everything he could to make this move happen. What he did for my family is special. Now, I just want to give 100 per cent on the pitch to repay him with results.”
The former Benfica and Chelsea ace joined City’s summer transfer plans alongside Iliman Ndiaye, Brazilian Allan Elias, Ayyoub Bouaddi, the 18-year-old French-born Moroccan, and Elliot Anderson.
