Why Haaland was left frustrated despite Man City’s win against Porto

Erling Haaland was left venting his frustration despite earning the Man of the Match award following his two-goal performance in the UEFA Champions League league phase clash against a resilient Porto side on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
The Norwegian striker broke the deadlock in the 47th minute before securing his brace late on, helping Enzo Maresca’s side start their European campaign on a winning note.
However, Haaland reflected on the tactical approach of the opponents that made their trip to Portugal a massive test.
“A difficult game against champions”
“It was an amazing game against the champions of Portugal. We knew it was going to be a difficult fight—man against man. They are a top team, impressive across the board, and they play amazing football,” Haaland said.
Despite the victory, City survived several close calls, but the Portuguese giants lacked a clinical edge in front of goal.
“Honestly, we controlled the whole first half. Of course, it’s a bit uncomfortable when they press high, but we created a lot of chances. I could have easily scored a few more goals,” he added.
Frustration over the Bouaddi incident
The striker also opened up about a specific moment in the second half where he felt his new teammate, Ayyoub Bouaddi, failed to pick him out when he was clean through on goal.
“I think he should have passed me the ball in the second half. I was completely unmarked, so I was a little annoyed—and that’s why I just told him that right now! 😂 But jokes aside, he had a great game apart from that missing pass,” Haaland explained.
The 18-year-old midfielder was making his Champions League debut for the Citizens, as was record signing Enzo Fernández, who has pledged to repay the club’s trust through his performances after completing his high-profile move from Chelsea.
The goal further extended the Manchester City prolific attacker’s fine record in the competition, as he now has as many goals as his appearances (59) at the grandest stage of European elite competition.
He has failed to score in only one of the three Premier League matches he has featured for Enzo Maresca’s side in the new campaign.
