Spanish rivals Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid are set to face off once again in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, marking the third occasion the two sides meet at this stage of the competition.

Barcelona secured their place in the last eight after a dominant 8-3 aggregate triumph over Newcastle United, following a 1-1 draw away and a convincing 7-2 victory at home. The Catalan giants had earlier finished fifth in the league phase standings.

Atlético de Madrid, on the other hand, progressed after edging past Tottenham Hotspur 7-5 on aggregate in the round of 16. They had previously overcome Club Brugge in the knockout play-offs after finishing 14th in the league phase.

Previous encounters

All prior European clashes between these teams have come at the quarter-final stage. Atlético emerged victorious in both ties — first in the 2013/14 season with a 2-1 aggregate scoreline, and again in 2015/16 with a 3-2 aggregate win. Key contributions came from Koke and Antoine Griezmann in those encounters.

Recent meetings

In domestic competition this season, Barcelona have had the upper hand. They claimed a 3-1 home victory in La Liga after coming from behind, and also secured an away win in Madrid despite initially trailing. However, Atlético had their revenge in the Copa del Rey, eliminating Barcelona in the semi-finals with a 4-3 aggregate score.

Head-to-head record

Across all competitions, the two sides have met 251 times. Barcelona have won 115 matches and scored 472 goals, while Atlético have recorded 80 victories with 371 goals.

Team form and history

This season marks Barcelona’s 30th appearance in the Champions League group stage, a record they share with Real Madrid. They have consistently featured in the competition since the 2003/04 campaign.

Atlético are competing in the tournament for the 16th time and have now qualified for 13 consecutive seasons. They previously reached the final in 2014 and 2016.

Key statistics

Barcelona have a strong record at home in Europe, losing just twice in their last 18 matches. They have also scored in 29 of their last 30 Champions League fixtures, although they have struggled to keep clean sheets recently.

Atlético have found goals easy to come by, with their recent European matches averaging nearly four goals per game. Their games this season have been particularly high-scoring, producing 55 goals across 12 matches.

Notably, Antoine Griezmann previously played for Barcelona, scoring 35 goals in over 100 appearances before returning to Atlético. Meanwhile, young talent Lamine Yamal has been in impressive form, scoring in three consecutive Champions League matches.
