Omanyala misses Commonwealth 100m final after sixth place finish

Kenya’s hopes of winning a medal in the men’s 100m at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games suffered a major setback after Ferdinand Omanyala failed to qualify for the final.
The African record holder finished sixth in the second semi-final in a time of 10.19 seconds, falling short of the qualification places and bringing an end to his campaign in the blue-riband sprint event. Victory would have moved him a step closer to becoming the first Kenyan athlete to successfully defend the Commonwealth men’s 100m championship.
Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi won the race in a blistering 9.94 seconds to secure automatic qualification for the final. Wales’ Jeremiah Azu also booked his place after clocking a season’s best of 10.00 seconds to finish second.
Ghana’s Abdul-Rasheed Saminu narrowly missed out despite finishing third in 10.06 seconds, while Australia’s Rohan Browning placed fourth in a season’s best 10.14. Trinidad and Tobago’s Omari Lewis crossed the line fifth in 10.15, just ahead of Omanyala. England’s Elliot Jones finished seventh in 10.24, while South Africa’s Bradley Nkoana was disqualified.
Omanyala had entered the championships carrying Kenya’s medal hopes in the sprint after enjoying success on the international stage in recent years. However, he was unable to produce the performance needed to progress from a highly competitive semi-final.
His elimination marks a disappointing end to his quest for a Commonwealth Games 100m medal, with Kenyan fans left frustrated as the country’s leading sprinter bows out before the final.
History in Birmingham
The Kenyan made history at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham when he clocked 10.02 seconds to claim the men’s 100m gold, becoming the country’s first winner of the event in 60 years. He crossed the finish line 0.11 seconds ahead of South Africa’s Akani Simbine to secure the title.
With only the top performers advancing to the final, Omanyala needed an outstanding performance if Kenya was to remain in contention for medals in the men’s sprint event in Glasgow.
Despite the setback, Omanyala remains one of Africa’s most accomplished sprinters and will now shift his focus to upcoming international competitions as he looks to bounce back from the disappointment.
