People across the globe will soon be able to sign up for volunteer opportunities at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the official application process beginning on July 14, 2026, exactly two years before the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

The volunteer programme will offer participants the chance to contribute both in the years leading up to the Games and during the sporting spectacle itself. Organisers expect approximately 60,000 volunteers to play a vital role in supporting events across Los Angeles and other host locations.

Available positions

As preparations intensify for LA28, organisers are inviting individuals to become part of the workforce that will help deliver one of the world’s largest sporting celebrations.

Volunteers will assist in a variety of capacities, including directing spectators, supporting athletes, helping with venue operations and ensuring visitors have a smooth Games experience. There will also be specialised assignments for applicants with professional skills such as healthcare qualifications or language translation expertise.

While the majority of positions will be located throughout the Greater Los Angeles area, additional opportunities will be available in cities hosting Olympic competitions, including Oklahoma City, New York, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis, San José and San Diego.

Those selected will be required to complete at least 10 shifts during either the Olympic volunteer programme, which runs from March to August 2028, or the Paralympic volunteer period from August to September 2028.

Volunteers central to Games success

Organisers emphasised that volunteers are essential to creating memorable experiences for athletes, spectators, media representatives and officials.

LA28 Chief Executive Officer Reynold Hoover highlighted the importance of the volunteer workforce, saying:

“Volunteers are the backbone of the Games. They are friendly faces who help welcome the world, create memorable experiences and bring the Olympic and Paralympic spirit to life. Their passion and energy will help define LA28 for athletes, fans and communities across the region.”

Hoover added that while athletes will be in the spotlight and fans fill stadiums, the volunteer team will be working behind the scenes to ensure every competition and venue operates smoothly.

Beyond the Games-time programme, LA28 has been engaging volunteers through community-based projects across Southern California since 2025.

Since the initiative was introduced, participants have taken part in more than 25 community events, including environmental clean-up campaigns on beaches, streets and trails, habitat restoration efforts and food-packing activities aimed at helping vulnerable groups.
