Sir Alex Ferguson was taken to the hospital after feeling unwell ahead of Manchester United’s English Premier League clash at Old Trafford with Liverpool on Sunday, May 3, 2026.

The 84-year-old legendary United boss, who is a regular at the club’s games both home and away, had been at Old Trafford to watch the big northwest derby Premier League match between the two rivals.

Sky Sports News understands he is conscious and has had precautionary checks.

Taken ill

Meanwhile, sources close to the BBC stated that the 84-year-old former Manchester United manager, who watches the team’s games at the director’s box, was taken to the hospital as a precautionary move.

The Scott was pictured with guests at the stadium on Sunday, a couple of hours before kick-off. He was then subsequently taken in an ambulance from Old Trafford to the hospital.

Ferguson led United to 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League triumphs during his 26 years in charge of the club from 1986 to his retirement in 2013.

He then served as an ambassador for the club until 2025.

In his illustrious career, he claimed 38 trophies with United, as well as three Scottish league titles and four Scottish Cups with Aberdeen.

Ferguson also managed St Mirren and Scotland, his native country, including at the 1986 World Cup, following a playing career as a forward, which saw him finish as top scorer in the Scottish Division One in 1965/66.

Ferguson had a brain haemorrhage in 2018, which left him seriously ill.

United seal UEFA Champions League football

Despite the pre-match scare, Michael Carrick side-shrugged off a scare of sorts to edge Reds 3-2.

The cliffhanger came after Liverpool equalised twice in the second half to pull level in the clash after United had coasted to a 2-0 cushion.

Kobbie Mainoo grabbed the match winner in the last quarter to seal a dramatic finish that saw the Red Devils seal their place in the UEFA Champions League football next season.
