AFC Leopards silence Murang’a Seal in dramatic FKF PL encounter

AFC Leopards’ stealth march towards the FKF Premier League title crossed another ice test as Ingwe silenced Murang’a Seal with a 2-0 victory to move within two points of the leaders and arch-rivals, Gor Mahia.

Fred Ambani’s team sustained their winning run just after Gor Mahia slipped in the title race following a goalless draw against Kariobangi Sharks on Saturday, April clash at Kasarani Stadium.

The slip-up meant Ingwe needed to take advantage of the opportunity handed to them, and the challengers proved equal to the task.

Two-horse race

Ronald Sichenje and Hassan Beja supplied the goals needed to complete the mission and throw a spanner in the works of a highly contested Premier League, which is now locked in a fierce two-horse race.

With the updated standings after Week 27 fixtures, Charles Akonnor’s lads lead the pack with 57 points, with Leopards hot on their heels in second with 52 points.

The chasers were, however, forced to dig deep in a clash filled with penalty drama and riveting action. Kelly Madada and the Ingwe fans were left fuming over an unawarded penalty after the midfielder was brought down inside the area in the seventh minute.

Penalty drama

The match’s most telling action arrived in the second half as the penalty drama continued. Sichenje fired Ingwe into the lead after the restart with a neatly drilled shot following a well-worked assist from Samuel Ssenyonjo.

The goal was exactly what the visitors needed, settling their nerves as the traveling crowd had begun to grow impatient with time ebbing away.

Joe’s penalty miss

Murang’a Seal had a golden chance to flip the script in the 70th minute after earning a penalty after Joe Waithira was upended. However, goalkeeper James Ssetuba thwarted the skipper and league-leading scorer to keep Ingwe’s lead intact.

That miss proved costly for the home team as Ambani’s side effectively put the game to bed via a Hassan Beja strike. With this win, Ingwe keeps up the hunt for the elusive league title they last lifted in 1998.
