AFC Leopards down Posta Rangers to keep FKF PL title race pressure on Gor Mahia

FKF Premier League hopefuls AFC Leopards have moved within three points of leaders Gor Mahia after downing Posta Rangers 2-1 in a league encounter at Nyayo National Stadium.

A scorcher from youngster Kelly Madada and Kayci Odhiambo’s strike in the opening half proved all Fred Ambani needed to return to winning ways. The team’s title prospect had come under scrutiny after their quest to keep pressure on leaders Gor Mahia suffered a setback in their last league encounter in Mombasa.

Early dominance

Ingwe went into the tie as the hungrier team and made count of their dominance early on.

Madada set the tone for the win with a venomous shot from outside the area from his weaker left foot to break the deadlock 11 minutes in.

The host doubled their advantage after Odhiambo scored from close range to give Ingwe the two-goal cushion at the break.

Robert Ponda’s strike only counted as a mere consolation for the visitors.

The victory sees Leopards remain rooted at second with 40 points, reducing the point difference between them and Gor Mahia, who awaits Sunday’s date against Robert Matano’s KCB.

Rangers’ woes

Meanwhile, the loss compounds a new low for Collins Omondi’s Rangers, who suffered their ninth league loss and are now in real danger of dropping further down from their 12th position on the pile.

The victory timing proved crucial for Ambani’s side, who approached the clash in danger of seeing third-placed Shabana catching up with them.

Earlier, Peter Okidi’s lads had silenced visiting Tusker FC to move menacingly close to second-placed Ingwe on 37 points.

The hosts rode an unfortunate own goal in the first half to sink a determined opponent led by Julien Mette on his FKF PL debut.

Danger man Brian Michira was pivotal to Shabana’s forays at goal and came close to putting the hosts to a 20th-minute lead.

The host lead came in the 38th minute, though, as Tusker’s backline turned the ball into their own net.

The goal came barely moments after Dennis Oalo and Fabian Adikiny had come close to the visitors with a brilliant give-and-go move.

Tusker’s foray to get back to the clash saw Chrispine Erambo’s long-range effort whistle off Stephen Ochieng’s goal at the hour mark.

The host ultimately prevailed in keeping intact their advantage and claiming the maximum points on home turf.
