Weatherman lists areas expected to experience moderate to heavy rains this week
By Ascah Mwango, March 2, 2026The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of increased rainfall in several parts of the country in the coming days.
In a public notice issued on Monday, March 2, 2026, the department said rainfall is expected to intensify and spread to more regions between March 3 and March 9, 2026.
According to the seven-day cumulative rainfall outlook, moderate to heavy rains, with isolated heavy storms, are likely to be experienced in the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, South-eastern Lowlands, the Coast, Western, North-eastern and North-western Kenya.
“Rainfall is expected to increase in intensity and spread across several parts of the country during the period. Moderate to heavy rainfall, with isolated heavy events, is likely over the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, South-eastern Lowlands, the Coast, Western, North-eastern and North-western Kenya,” the department said in its forecast.
The weatherman urged residents in the affected areas to be prepared for possible flooding, especially in low-lying regions, and to take necessary precautions during heavy downpours.
On temperatures, the department noted that some regions will continue to experience high daytime heat. Areas in the Coast, South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern and North-western Kenya are expected to record maximum temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius.
“Daytime (maximum) temperatures above 30°C are expected over the Coast, South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern and North-western Kenya,” the statement read.
At the same time, cold nights are expected in other parts of the country. The Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro are likely to record minimum temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius.
“Night-time (minimum) temperatures below 10°C are likely in parts of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro,” the department added.
Nairobi
This comes hours after the weatherman announced that rainfall will continue across the Nairobi Metropolitan area over the next 24 hours.
In a notice, the department said moderate rainfall is expected in several parts of the city and its surrounding areas, with isolated heavy downpours likely, particularly in parts of Westlands and nearby neighbourhoods.

The forecast, valid from 9 am on March 2 to 9 am on March 3, indicates that showers will persist during the day and at night. Residents have been cautioned about possible waterlogging in low-lying and poorly drained areas, with motorists and pedestrians urged to exercise caution in flood-prone zones.
