Sunday weather: Kenya Met predicts chilly night with light showers
By Dan Kauna, August 30, 2026Sunny intervals and generally dry weather will dominate the country for the remainder of Sunday, August 30, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department.
The forecast indicates that most parts of the country are expected to remain generally dry through the afternoon hours.
However, residents in coastal counties and parts of the Eastern region can expect light rainfall alongside high afternoon temperatures.
Coast and eastern region
According to the official forecast, afternoon conditions in the coastal strip will feature sun with localised rain.
Counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Taita Taveta are set to experience light showers over few places mixed with sunny intervals as daytime temperatures reach 30°C in Mombasa, Lamu, and Taita Taveta, and 29°C in Kilifi.
Kwale County will see afternoon temperatures peak at 28°C with light showers also expected over few places.
Further inland, parts of the eastern and north-eastern regions will see warm weather interspersed with brief rainfall.
Tana River, Garissa, and Wajir counties are projected to have “sunny intervals with a chance of light showers over few places”, with maximum temperatures climbing to 32°C in Tana River, 34°C in Garissa, and 35°C in Wajir.
Mandera will record the highest temperature in the country at 37°C under clear sunny skies.
Warm sunny conditions
In the Central Highlands, including Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, and Nyandarua, warm conditions will prevail with sunny intervals throughout the afternoon.
Maximum temperatures in Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang’a, and Nyeri will reach 25°C to 26°C, while Nyandarua will hover around 23°C.
Isolated pockets in Embu, Kirinyaga, and Tharaka-Nithi may see occasional light afternoon rain amidst sunny breaks, reaching highs of 25°C to 26°C.
A wind advisory remains active for several northern, eastern, and coastal areas. The department warns of “strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui Counties”.
Meanwhile, Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, and the Lake Victoria Basin, including Kisumu, Nakuru, and Eldoret, will enjoy sunny intervals with maximum temperatures ranging between 25°C and 36°C before sunset between 6:22 pm in Mombasa and 6:44 pm in Kisumu.
